Are high Protein diets just another craze, pushed on us by Keto advocates & protein bar manufacturers? Well, not if you believe scientists like; Prof Stuart Phillips, from the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, Dr Gabrielle Lyon & Dr Stacey Sims to name a few. When I did my nutrition training many, many, years ago, the thinking was that most people in western societies were getting enough protein to cover their needs. But, nutrition is a young science and its incredibly hard to study what effect eating what has. Nevertheless the role of protein to help us retain and build muscle as we age is an exciting area being studied. The podcasts referenced below, really answered for me why it is, that we need more as we age. I encourage you to give them a listen for a fuller understanding than I, a none scientist, can give here. I think the jury is still out on exactly how much we should consume and if it matters if it is all in one meal. Personally, I don't want to weigh food or stress too much about it but I certainly try to consume significantly more than I used to and encourage you to do the same.
